Athletics Wall of Fame

Published April 29, 2010

Wall of Fame inductees for 2009 included the late Jim Johnson (builder, men's hockey), the 1972-73 Nor’Westers men's hockey team, and athletes Egon Beiler (men's wrestling), Julia Mangold (née Scott) (women's basketball), Terttu Vuorinen (women's basketball and track), and Jim Zoet (men's basketball).

The late Jim Johnson was the original President of Lakehead Thunderwolves Hockey and was a major contributor in the return of university hockey to Thunder Bay. Johnson was also part of the Lakehead Booster Club executive in the 1980s.

The 1972-73 Nor'Westers dominated Canadian competition in winning the former Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Championship and qualified for the CIAU Championship in Toronto. The team also competed against American schools in the International Collegiate Hockey Association.

Beiler, a two-time Olympian and former Commonwealth and Pan-American gold medalist, wrestled at Lakehead during the 1970s and was a world-class freestyle wrestler in the bantam and featherweight divisions.

Julia Mangold is a former GPAC All-Star, Lakehead MVP, and twice led the Lakehead women’s basketball in scoring during their heyday in the 1980s.

Terttu Vuorinen is a pioneer of Lakehead women’s basketball, leading the team in scoring twice during the 1960s as the institution transitioned from college to university. She won the first two Lakehead Female Athlete of the Year awards and also made her mark on the Thunder Bay track and field scene.

Jim Zoet transferred from Kent State University after the 1975-76 season and went on to become a two-time CIS All-Canadian, Canadian National men's basketball team member, and the only Lakehead athlete to play in the NBA.
