The arrival of the new year has launched the countdown to a major milestone – Lakehead University's 50th anniversary in 2015.

Since 1965, Lakehead University's alumni have been expanding the limits of knowledge and influencing many spheres of human endeavour. People like Colette Lepage (BEng'99) who manages one of the world's largest "cleanrooms" at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. Her work evaluating components for the Hubble Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope have made her part of the history of space exploration.

Lepage embodies the tenacity characteristic of our alumni. "As a kid," she says, "I remember dreaming about how awesome it would be to be a member of NASA and thinking it could never happen. But it did."

Over the past 49 years, our grads have taken innumerable paths to fulfill their aspirations and have journeyed to every corner of the world.

As we approach our 50th anniversary, we want to hear from you. Tell us about your successes and those of your fellow graduates. What have you crossed off your bucket list? What career goals have you attained?

Speaking of milestones, the release of the 2012-13 Annual Report this past November provided a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the past twelve months.

It was a remarkable year in which Lakehead students, faculty, and staff continued to seek imaginative solutions to social and economic challenges. We were named one of the top 10 most inventive universities in Canada by The Impact Group because of our outstanding research initiatives.

Other watershed moments included the establishment of The Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining and Exploration and the installation of Canada's former ambassador to the United States, Derek Burney, as Lakehead's new chancellor.

Two of our music students were centre stage when they played a piano recital at the famous Carnegie Hall after winning an international music competition, reminding us once again that our students are far from ordinary (read the year's highlights).
