Lakehead alumnus Jamie Sokalsky (centre) presented a generous gift from Barrick Gold Corporation to Lakehead University President Brian Stevenson and Northern Ontario School of Medicine Dean Roger Strasser
The company began supporting Lakehead in 1996 with a named bursary and in January, 2011 made another generous donation totalling $235,000 to Lakehead University and to the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM).
This gift, which includes matching funds from the province of Ontario through the Ontario Trust for Student Support program, will finance the creation of an endowed scholarship for a Lakehead student focused on mining and a NOSM student bursary for a student with roots in Marathon.
Jamie Sokalsky (HBCom’80), a Lakehead University graduate and Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Barrick Gold Corporation, was proud to make the announcement in person at a media conference last January at Lakehead’s Thunder Bay campus. “Barrick Gold Corporation has had a long tradition of supporting higher education,” he said, “and our roots in Northwestern Ontario run deep.”
Jamie met his wife Nancy Braun (HBCom’80) while studying at Lakehead in the late 1970s. Nancy is the daughter of Harold Braun, one of the founders of Lakehead University, who was principal of Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology, and the first dean of University Schools at Lakehead University.
“I know that education and healthcare are major priorities in Northwestern Ontario, and I am confident these projects will make a difference,” Jamie added.
In addition to the scholarship and bursary, the Barrick Gold gift will finance a technology infrastructure upgrade to the Wilson Memorial Hospital and Marathon Family Health Centre, create a new Learner Suite in Marathon, and support other initiatives by NOSM and Marathon to advance the dream of a healthier north.
